Wabash tennis team falls at regionals; Mattern completes season undefeated

CULVER -- The Wabash boys tennis ended its season Tuesday night, 2-3 against Warsaw in regional play. The Apaches ended with a record of 20-2.

Luke Mattern at No.2 singles won 6-2 7-5 finishing his season unbeaten, having not dropped a set all year.

"He is the first boy to go undefeated since I have been here but we have no records before that,” Athletic Director Matt Stone said. “He and Jenny Dawes in 2003 are the only tennis people we have had go undefeated for a whole season in my 16 years."

Rob Ford had a tough match at No.1 singles and he dropped his first set 2-6. However, Ford played an amazing last two sets winning 6-4 6-4.

Gage Ballard had a tough match but played well losing 0-6 0-6. No.2 doubles of Jonah France and Asif Khan lost a tough first set 5-7 then lost the second 2-6.

No.1 doubles (Alex Driscoll and Matt Stein) came out slow dropping the first set 0-6. And started the second set 1-4, however they battled the whole way through finally losing the second set 4-6.

"I was proud how they competed all day long against a great team," coach Niko Macaluso said. "They had a great year and am looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish next year."
