Peru wrestlers win sectional crown; Several local wrestlers advance to regional

PERU – The Peru Tigers captured its wrestling sectional on Saturday, besting the eight-team field that included all four Wabash County high schools.

Manchester was the best finisher among the local schools, coming in third. Northfield was fourth, while Wabash placed seventh and Southwood was eighth.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to regional, which also will take place at Peru.

Northfield had two wrestlers win their weight classes, while Manchester had one.

For Northfield, Michal Ford (160 pounds) and Jake Stephan (285) captured first place with pins in the championship matches.

Manchester’s Quentin Moore (170) also captured first.

Northfield’s Drew Clark (132), Matthew Carey (138), Layne Evans (152) and Drake Heitz (182) all finished second, while Logan Carey (132) placed third.

“The kids are still showing improvement as we finish out the season,” coach Gary Norman said. “Now we need to step up our performance for regional is we want to make it to semistate at Fort Wayne.

“The coaches are very excited about how well the kids wrestled Saturday. Placing six in the finals was a dream come true for us.”

Manchester advanced nine to regional.

In addition to Moore, moving on for the Squires will be Jackson Mathais (120), fourth place; Braden Fortner (126), fourth place; Trey Addair (132), fourth place; Remington Trick (138), third place; Delton Moore (145), second place; Wade France (160), second place, and Landon Tharp (220), second place.

Four Southwood wrestlers advanced from sectional. They are Seth Teague (106), Asher Teague (152), Chris Adams (182) and Cavin Beavers (285).

Wrestlers who finished in fifth place are regional alternates.

Heath Lambert (170) is an alternate for Northfield, while Philip Klinger (113) and Timothy Charles (195) are alternates for Southwood.

Results for Wabash’s wrestling team were not available.
