Local Farmer Jim Erickson will address the Somerset Lions Club on Monday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. He will discuss how pork is different today; it’s definitely not your parents’ pork! 30 years ago, not many people could have imagined pork would be among the leanest meats available. How and why pork changed will take center stage at the regularly scheduled Somerset Lions Club meeting.
Jim Erickson of TDM Farms in North Manchester, will address the group at the Somerset Community building located at 20 Slocum Trail in Somerset. Titled “America’s Pork,” the speech by Erickson will highlight how farmers have changed how they raise pigs to meet consumers’ demand for lean, nutritious, and safe food.
“Farmers have been working continuously to change how they raise pigs for the better,” said Erickson. “They’ve been able to make great progress in animal health, food quality and protecting the environment.”
A USDA study found pork tenderloin is as lean as a skinless chicken breast, and the American Heart Association has certified it as a heart-healthy food.
“Modern barns, paired with a focus on nutrition and animal care, mean pigs live healthier lives than ever before, said Erickson. “And, healthy pigs mean healthy food.”
Indiana’s swine industry contributes more the $3 billion to the state’s economy and contributes more than $465 million in rural economies. The public is invited to attend this meeting.
